1. Did you encounter any challenges in developing your ideas? What were they and how did you solve them?

At first I struggled with idea generations, I wanted to combine different materials that have contrast of feels between them but I didn’t know how I could connect them such as pieces of metal and fabric. Then I went to metal workshop just to get some idea that I possibly start with, and there I got some advices of making holes on metal pieces, and I found it as a clue of making joint to connect with other materials. I sometimes tend to stay in a studio and do some brainstorming, but today I learnt that I actually should go somewhere else to get new ideas that I didn’t even thought of and push myself ahead.

2. What new skills/materials did you explore? How do you think they can be used in developing your project?

As I mentioned, when I was working in metal workshop I learnt appropriateness of combination of material and equipment to use. For example, when I wanted to make a hole on a metal surface, the size of hole I want affects which size of drill I should use. In today’s case I used smaller one, because I wanted the whole to be quite small. I think it is really important in any workshop to choose appropriate equipment for the certain material, this is related to the quality of finishing and also safely. Since I’m interested in garment details of work wear for my project, I would have some other chances to engage with metal as it’s sometimes used for small detail on a garment, I would like to look at the material and use of equipment more carefully.

3. Did you see any processes / materials / ideas from you peers you would like to explore yourself? What were they and how might you use them yourself?

I've found a work by one of my peer really inspirational, she used combination of wood and staplers as material. And the contrast between two material mede viewers want to touch it, such as the smooth surface of wood shaped like an egg which is beautifully curved, contrary to the shining and solid feel of cube made of staplers. Even it was a really simple piece, composed by a wooden egg-like piece and stapler cube which glue wasn't used and formed only by the tension of staplers, it had various contrast such as feel, colour, texture and form. Since I'm interested in use of metal for this project linking to those metalic detail of workwear, I could be inspired by the idea of making contrast between metal and other material.
